About this tool

Show

Paste a list of names and split them into balanced random groups, either by choosing how many groups you want or by choosing how many people go in each. The list is shuffled with a Fisher-Yates pass driven by the Web Crypto API, then dealt out one at a time like cards around a table, which is what keeps the result even: no group is ever more than one person larger than another. That dealing order matters in the per-size mode too. Ten people in groups of four gives you three groups of four, three, and three, spreading the shortfall instead of leaving one group of two. Press shuffle again for a completely fresh split. Everything runs locally in your browser — nothing is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Are groups always exactly equal?

Not always — if the total isn't divisible, the first groups get one extra person. For 10 people in 3 groups: 4 / 3 / 3.

How random is it?

Uses crypto.getRandomValues with the Fisher–Yates shuffle, so each ordering is equally likely. No modulo bias.

Difference vs Raffle Draw?

Raffle Draw picks N winners from a list. Group Maker assigns everyone into balanced groups — no one is left out.

Are my names sent anywhere?

No. The list stays on this page; nothing is uploaded.

Why 4 / 3 / 3 rather than 4 / 4 / 2?

Because people are dealt out one at a time like cards around a table, not poured into one group until it is full. Dealing spreads the remainder, so no group is ever more than one person larger than another.

Can I reproduce a split I made earlier?

No. Every shuffle draws fresh randomness and nothing is seeded, so a previous arrangement cannot be recreated. Copy or screenshot the result while it is on screen if you will need to refer back to it.
