Random Picker — Roulette & Ladder
Pick a winner with a spinning wheel or a ladder (ghost-leg) draw.
How to use
- Choose a mode: Roulette or Ladder.
- For Roulette, add your options and press Spin.
- For Ladder, enter as many results as people. The ladder is drawn with the results hidden.
- Tap a name to trace that person's path and reveal their result, or press Reveal all. Press New ladder for a fresh draw.
- Add or remove entries any time to re-run.
About this tool
ShowHide
Make a fair random choice two ways: spin a roulette wheel of your options, or run a ladder draw (amidakuji, also called ghost leg) that matches people to results. The two modes answer different questions. The wheel picks one winner at a time, with equal odds for every entry however the slices look; the spin is only the animation catching up with a choice already made. The ladder assigns everyone at once and is always a one-to-one match: every person lands on a different result, which repeated spins cannot promise.
A ladder with randomly drawn rungs is not fair. Each row moves a line at most one column, so people tend to end near where they started. In a simulation with 10 people and 20 rows, the first person reached the first result 22% of the time and the last result 0.9% of the time, against 10% each for a fair draw. So this tool decides the assignment first, picking one of the n! possible assignments with equal probability, and then draws a ladder that produces it: a few rows of random rungs at the top, then the rungs that carry each line to its target (an odd-even transposition sort). It looks hand-drawn, but every person has a 1/n chance of every result.
The results start hidden behind a question mark. Tap a name and that person's path is traced in colour down to the result it reveals, or press Reveal all to see everything at once. If the number of results differs from the number of people you get a warning, and a missing result shows as a dash. Random numbers come from the browser's cryptographic generator (crypto.getRandomValues), without modulo bias. Nobody outside the screen can verify the draw afterwards, though, so for a real prize run it in front of everyone taking part.
Frequently asked questions
Is the result truly random?
Yes. The roulette winner and the ladder assignment come from the browser's cryptographic random generator. The ladder is not drawn at random and then read: one of all possible assignments is picked with equal probability first and the ladder is built to produce it, so each person has the same 1/n chance of every result.
How many options can I add?
As many as you like. The wheel and ladder resize to fit, though very large lists get harder to read.
What is a ladder draw?
Also called amidakuji or ghost-leg: each person follows a line down, switching sides at every rung, ending at one result.
Isn't a ladder with random rungs fair anyway?
No. Each row moves a line at most one column, so results near the starting column are more likely. With 10 people and 20 rows the first person gets the first result about 22% of the time and the last about 0.9%. This tool removes that bias by drawing the assignment uniformly first and building the ladder to match it.
Are my entries saved?
Your lists are stored locally in your browser so they're there next time, but nothing is uploaded.
Can the same name win twice on the wheel?
Yes. Each spin is an independent draw, so a repeat is possible and should be expected over several spins. Use the ladder instead when everyone has to end up with a different result.
Is this random enough for a prize draw?
It uses the browser's cryptographic random generator, which is more than fair enough for deciding who buys coffee or who sits where. It is not auditable, though: nobody can check afterwards that the draw was fair, so for anything with a real prize attached, run the draw on a screen in front of the participants.
