White Noise Generator (Pink & Brown Noise)
Play white, pink or brown noise for sleep, focus or masking sounds, with a volume control, a sleep timer that fades out and WAV download.
How to use
- Pick white, pink or brown noise. Pink is a good starting point for sleep and focus.
- Press Play and raise the volume slowly from a low level.
- Choose a sleep timer if you want the sound to fade out and stop on its own.
- To use the sound elsewhere, choose a length and download a WAV file.

This generator plays three kinds of steady noise and lets you set the volume and a sleep timer. White noise has equal power at every frequency, so it sounds bright, like a hiss or radio static. Pink noise loses 3 dB of power per octave, which gives every octave the same energy; to most ears it sounds softer and more natural, closer to rain or wind. Brown noise loses 6 dB per octave and is mostly low rumble, like a distant waterfall or the inside of an aeroplane.
The sound is generated in your browser: each colour is a 12-second buffer per ear, with the two ears independent so it sounds wide rather than coming from one point, and the loop is cross-faded so there is no click where it repeats. Pink noise uses a well-known filter that stays within a fraction of a decibel of the ideal slope across the audible range, and brown noise is white noise passed through a very low one-pole filter. All three are set to the same average level, so switching colour does not jump in loudness.
People use steady noise to mask distracting sounds, help with falling asleep, settle babies or keep focus in a noisy room; it is also handy for checking speakers and headphones. Keep the volume modest: long exposure to loud sound can damage hearing, and for infants guidance suggests keeping a noise machine well away from the cot and at a low level. The sleep timer fades the sound out over its last 10 seconds. Playback can stop when a phone locks or the browser puts the tab to sleep, which is a limit of browsers rather than of the noise. A download writes a stereo WAV of 10, 30 or 60 seconds at the full common level, for use in other players.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between white, pink and brown noise?
White noise has equal power per hertz and sounds bright. Pink noise falls by 3 dB per octave, so each octave has equal energy and it sounds softer. Brown noise falls by 6 dB per octave and is mostly deep rumble.
Which noise is best for sleep?
There is no single answer; it is a matter of what you find comfortable. Many people find pink or brown noise easier to listen to for hours than white noise, which can sound harsh. Keep the volume low either way.
Why does the sound stop when my phone locks?
Browsers often suspend audio from a page when the screen locks or the tab goes into the background. Keeping the screen on, or downloading the WAV and playing it in a music app on repeat, avoids that.
Does the noise repeat?
Each colour plays a 12-second loop per ear, with the two ears different and the loop point cross-faded. Random noise has no melody to recognise, so the repetition is not noticeable.
Is it safe to use with babies?
Use a low volume and keep the device away from the cot. Guidance on infant sleep machines recommends modest levels because long exposure to loud sound can harm hearing.
Is anything uploaded or downloaded from a server?
No. The noise is computed in your browser, and a downloaded WAV is built on your device.
