Tip Calculator

Enter the bill, pick a tip percentage with the slider (0–30%) or one of the quick presets (10, 15, 18, 20, 25%), and set how many people are splitting — the tip amount, grand total, and per-person share update instantly as you type. Amounts are plain numbers rounded to two decimals, so the calculator works with any currency, and everything runs in your browser with nothing sent or stored. A percentage tip is computed on whatever amount you enter, and that choice matters: in the US it's customary to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, so type that in for the conventional figure, or use the post-tax total if you'd rather be a bit more generous. Norms also vary widely by country — roughly 15–20% at sit-down restaurants in the US and Canada, around 10% or simply rounding up in much of Europe where service is often included, and no tipping at all in Japan, South Korea, or China. When in doubt, check the receipt: if a service charge is already added, an extra tip is optional.

How to use

  1. Enter the bill amount — the pre-tax subtotal if you want to tip on that (the US convention), or the full total.
  2. Pick a tip percentage with the slider (0–30%) or tap a quick preset: 10, 15, 18, 20, or 25%.
  3. Set how many people are splitting the bill (whole numbers, minimum 1).
  4. Read off the tip, the grand total, and the per-person share — all three update instantly and round to two decimals.

Frequently asked questions

Is the tip based on the pre-tax total?
The percentage is applied to whatever amount you enter. US convention is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, so enter that if you want the standard figure; entering the post-tax total simply yields a slightly larger tip.
How much should I tip?
In the US and Canada, 15–20% is standard at sit-down restaurants (18–20% for good service), 10–15% for delivery, and a dollar or two per drink at bars. In much of Europe a service charge is often included, so rounding up or about 10% is plenty. In Japan, South Korea, and China tipping isn't customary and may even be politely refused.
Which currency is used?
None in particular — amounts are unit-less numbers rounded to two decimals, so it works the same for dollars, euros, pounds, or any other currency.
How is the per-person amount found?
The total (bill plus tip) is divided evenly by the number of people and rounded to two decimals. With some amounts the shares times the head count can differ from the exact total by a cent — have one person absorb the difference.
Is anything saved or sent anywhere?
No. The calculator is plain client-side code: no account, no server call, no storage. Refresh the page and it resets to a blank bill.
