Tile Calculator

Everyday

Enter the room's length and width and the size of a single tile, and the calculator returns how many tiles you need to cover the area. It divides the room area by the tile area, then adds a waste allowance (default 10%) to cover cuts, breakages and spares, and rounds up to whole tiles. Give the number of tiles per box and it also tells you how many boxes to buy. Switch between metric (room in metres, tiles in centimetres) and imperial (room in feet, tiles in inches). Everything is computed locally in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

How much waste should I allow?
10% is a common default for straight layouts; allow 15% or more for diagonal patterns, herringbone, or rooms with many cuts around obstacles. The waste percentage is added before rounding up.
Does it account for the room shape?
It assumes a rectangular area from length × width. For L-shaped or irregular rooms, split them into rectangles, calculate each, and add the results. The waste allowance covers normal cutting around edges.
Metric and imperial — what units does it expect?
In metric, room dimensions are in metres and tile dimensions in centimetres. In imperial, the room is in feet and tiles in inches.
