About this tool
ShowHide
When someone on a monthly salary starts or leaves partway through a month, that month's pay is prorated for the days worked. Korean labour law sets no formula, so the employment contract or company rules decide; where they are silent, the Ministry of Employment and Labor's interpretation divides by the month's calendar days.
Three methods are calculated. The calendar-day method is salary × days worked ÷ days in the month. The 30-day method is salary ÷ 30 × days worked, which pays a little more in 31-day months and less in February. The working-day method is salary × weekdays in the period ÷ weekdays in the month, counting public holidays as weekdays. The period includes both its first and last day.
For example, a salary of 3,000,000 won starting on 15 October is 17 of 31 days: 1,645,161 won by calendar days, 1,700,000 by the 30-day method and 1,636,363 by working days (12 of 22). Whether fixed allowances such as meal pay are prorated, and insurance and tax deductions, are not modelled; check the company's rules too.
Frequently asked questions
How is pay prorated?
There is no statutory formula; without company rules the usual method is salary × days worked ÷ calendar days in the month, counting the first or last day itself.
How does dividing by 30 differ?
It treats a day as 1/30 of the salary whatever the month's length: a little more than calendar days in a 31-day month, less in February.
Is the leaving date the last day worked?
In Korea the day after the last day of work is usually the leaving date; enter the last day you worked or were employed.
Do weekends count?
The calendar and 30-day methods count calendar days including weekends; the working-day method counts weekdays only.
