A calendar-method estimate (ovulation = next period − luteal phase; fertile window = ovulation day and the five days before). Do not use it as contraception.

How to use

  1. Pick the first day of your last period.
  2. Enter your average cycle length (from the first day of one period to the day before the next). Adjust the luteal phase if you know it.
  3. Read the expected ovulation day, the fertile window, the next period and the table of the next six cycles.

About this tool

Show

This calculator uses the calendar method. Ovulation is taken as the luteal phase (usually 14 days) before the next period starts, and the fertile window as the six days ending on ovulation day, because sperm can survive up to five days and the egg about one (Wilcox, Weinberg and Baird, NEJM 1995). A longer or shorter cycle is mostly a longer or shorter phase before ovulation, so in a 32-day cycle ovulation falls about 18 days after the period starts.

For example, with a last period starting on 1 October and a 28-day cycle, ovulation is expected on 15 October, the fertile window runs from 10 to 15 October and the next period is due on 29 October. The table starts at the cycle that contains today and lists six.

The calendar method is an average-based estimate: ovulation can move by several days from one month to the next even in the same person, and the error grows when cycles are shorter than 21 days, longer than 35 or irregular. It is not accurate enough for contraception. When trying to conceive, ovulation test strips, basal body temperature or an ultrasound give a much better reading. The dates you enter stay in this browser and are never sent anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

How is ovulation day worked out?

By subtracting the luteal phase, usually 14 days, from the next expected period. In a 28-day cycle that is 14 days after the period starts (cycle day 15, counting the first day of bleeding as day 1); in a 32-day cycle about 18 days after.

How long is the fertile window?

Six days: ovulation day and the five before it. Sperm can live up to five days in the body and the egg about one. The chance of conceiving is highest one to two days before ovulation.

What if my cycles are irregular?

You can enter an average of recent cycles, but the estimate gets less reliable. Below 21 days or above 35 the calculator shows a warning; ovulation tests or temperature tracking work better then.

Can I use it for contraception?

No. The calendar method cannot see ovulation shifting by several days from month to month, so it fails often. Use a method agreed with a clinician.
