NATO Phonetic Alphabet

Yes — adopted by NATO, ICAO, and ITU. It's the international standard for spelling letters over voice channels and is the same alphabet used by airlines and the military.

Both are intentional. 'Juliett' avoids the silent t for French speakers; 'X-ray' is hyphenated in the official document. Both are the standard spellings in NATO charts.

0–9 come out as plain English words, 'Zero, One, Two, …'. ICAO and NATO radiotelephony do prescribe special spoken forms for several digits — TREE for 3, FOW-er for 4, FIFE for 5, NIN-er for 9 — but this tool does not substitute them, so use those forms yourself over the radio.

Characters outside the alphabet, digits, and basic punctuation are left as [character] so you can spot them. Add a phonetic for them by hand if needed.

Yes, but the case is not carried. Lookup folds to lowercase, so 'A' and 'a' both come out Alpha and the uppercase toggle only restyles the output — it does not mean the letter was capital. Say 'capital' or 'lower-case' yourself before each one. Symbols come through as [!] or [#] in brackets rather than a word, so you have to name them aloud too, and a space is marked (space) because silence on a phone line is not distinguishable from a pause.

Not on an actual radio. ICAO prescribes pronunciations that differ from the plain English reading precisely because the plain reading is ambiguous across languages: three is spoken 'tree', four 'fower', five 'fife', nine 'niner', and thousand 'tousand' — five and nine in particular are easy to lose against fire and the German nein. Several letters shift too, with Alpha as 'AL fah' and Victor as 'VIK tah'. The written words on this page are the standard ones; the spoken forms are what you use over the air.
