CPS Test: Mouse Click Speed and Button Check

Measure clicks per second over 1, 5, 10, 30 or 60 seconds, and check every mouse button, the wheel and double-click faults.

How to use

  1. Choose a duration: 1, 5, 10, 30 or 60 seconds.
  2. Click the large pad to start, then press the left button as fast as you can until the time runs out.
  3. Read your CPS and total clicks; the best score for each duration is saved. After a second, click again to start a new run.
  4. If a button seems faulty, press each button and roll the wheel in the button check box below, and watch whether a single press registers as a double-click.

About this tool

Show

CPS, clicks per second, is how fast you can click, and it is the usual yardstick in games such as Minecraft PvP. Pick a duration and click the large pad: the clock starts on the first click, and when it runs out the result is clicks ÷ seconds. Thirty-four clicks in five seconds is 6.80 CPS. The best score for each duration is kept in this browser.

Clicks are counted when the button goes down (mousedown), which is slightly earlier than the click event fired on release and is not lost if the pointer drifts off the pad. Only the left button counts, and for one second after the time is up clicks are ignored so that a final burst does not start a new run. Space or Enter also work, but a key held down and auto-repeating does not count.

Typical figures often quoted are about 6 to 7 CPS for ordinary clicking, around 10 for jitter clicking (tensing the arm to vibrate the finger) and more for butterfly clicking with two fingers on one button. A one-second test swings a lot with the timing of the first click, so five or ten seconds is fairer for comparing skill; thirty and sixty seconds measure stamina. Some game servers ban butterfly clicking, macros or shortened debounce settings, so check their rules.

The button and wheel check below is for diagnosing a mouse. Press the left, middle (wheel click), right, back and forward buttons inside the box and roll the wheel up and down; each one detected turns green. If a single press shows up as a double-click, the switch is probably worn and sending two signals, a common fault. Horizontal wheel tilt reaches browsers inconsistently, so it is not checked here.

Frequently asked questions

How is CPS calculated?

It is the number of left-button presses during the test divided by its length in seconds: 34 presses in 5 seconds is 34 ÷ 5 = 6.80 CPS. The clock starts on the first click, so getting ready does not use up time.

What is a normal CPS?

Figures often quoted are about 6 to 7 CPS for ordinary clicking, around 10 for jitter clicking and higher for butterfly clicking. They are not from any formal study, and results vary with the mouse and the duration, so the most useful comparison is with your own earlier scores under the same settings.

One press registers as two clicks.

That is the classic double-click fault: a worn switch contact sends two signals per press. Press slowly, once at a time, in the check box below; if double-click turns green, that is very likely the cause. Use the warranty if you can, or replace the switch or look for a debounce setting in the maker's software.

Won't the back and forward buttons leave the page?

Inside the check box the browser's back and forward actions are blocked. Outside it they may navigate as usual, so press them inside the box. If the mouse driver has reassigned a button to something else, the browser may receive nothing for it.

Where are my scores stored?

Only the best score for each duration is kept, in this browser's local storage; nothing is sent to a server. Clearing the scores or the browser's site data removes them.
