About this tool

Show

Choose an image, drop it on the page or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V, type the top and bottom captions, and the meme is drawn as you type. The captions use Anton, an open-licence typeface cut like the Impact face of classic image macros, in white with a black outline; you can switch to black text, turn the outline off, keep the original capitalisation or change the size. The finished image downloads as PNG or JPG with no watermark, and nothing is uploaded: it is drawn on a canvas in your browser.

Long captions wrap onto several lines and shrink automatically so that each caption stays within the top or bottom third of the picture and never runs off the edge. Text size follows the shorter side of the image, so a tall phone screenshot gets the same proportion of text as a wide photo. Press Enter in a caption to force a line break.

Korean, Japanese and Chinese work too. Anton has no glyphs for those scripts, so they are drawn with your system's bold sans-serif (Apple SD Gothic Neo, Malgun Gothic, Hiragino, Microsoft YaHei and similar), which means the same meme can look slightly different on another computer — the downloaded file, though, is fixed once saved. Very large photos are scaled to 2,000 pixels on the long side, which is still more than any social network displays.

Remember that the picture belongs to whoever took it: use your own photos or images you are allowed to reuse, especially for anything commercial.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a watermark?

No. The downloaded image contains only your picture and your captions.

Are my images uploaded?

No. The meme is drawn on a canvas in your browser and saved from there; the picture never leaves your device.

Which font is used?

Anton, an open-licence typeface designed in the same condensed, heavy style as Impact, which is what classic memes use. It is included with the page, so Latin text looks the same on every device.

Can I write captions in Korean, Japanese or Chinese?

Yes. Those characters are drawn with your operating system's bold sans-serif font, because Anton covers only Latin, Vietnamese and other Latin-based scripts.

Why did my long caption get smaller?

Each caption is limited to a third of the picture's height and to its width. When text would overflow, it is wrapped and the font size reduced step by step until it fits.

PNG or JPG?

PNG keeps the text edges perfectly sharp and is best for screenshots and cartoons. JPG is smaller and fine for photos, but the outline may show faint compression artefacts.
