Image to Text (OCR) — Extract Text from Images
Copy the text out of a screenshot, photo or scanned page. OCR runs in your browser in 12 languages; the image is never uploaded.
How to use
- Select the languages in the image. English plus your page's language is preselected; up to three can be active.
- Drop an image, click to choose one, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac).
- Press Extract text. The first run downloads the engine and language data, which can take a few seconds.
- Check the text in the box — fix any misread characters — then copy it or download it as a .txt file.
About this tool
ShowHide
Drop an image, choose a file or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V, pick the languages in it, and the tool reads the text with Tesseract, the open-source OCR engine, compiled to WebAssembly and running in this tab. The result appears in an editable box you can copy or save as a .txt file. The picture never leaves your device, so it is safe for receipts, contracts and screenshots of private messages.
Twelve languages are available: English, Korean, Japanese, Chinese (simplified and traditional), Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Russian and Vietnamese. Choose every language the image contains — up to three — because Tesseract only recognises the scripts it was told to expect; Korean text read with English alone comes out as nonsense. Each language's model (1–3 MB) and the engine (about 4 MB) download the first time they are needed and are then cached by the browser.
Accuracy depends far more on the image than on the engine. Clean screenshots and scans at 300 dpi usually come back almost perfect. Small text (below about 10 pixels high), blur, strong perspective, curved pages, handwriting, stylised fonts and text over busy photos all lower it, and the confidence figure shown with the result drops with them. Crop to the text and photograph pages straight on for the best result.
The output is plain text: line breaks follow the image, but tables, columns, bold and font sizes are not reproduced, and the reading order of complex layouts can be off. Tesseract puts a space between every Chinese or Japanese character; the tool removes those, since the languages are written without spaces.
Frequently asked questions
Is my image uploaded?
No. The OCR engine runs as WebAssembly in your browser tab. The engine and language files are downloaded from this site once, but your image is only read locally.
Why is the result full of wrong characters?
Usually the wrong language is selected, or the text is too small or blurry. Select every language that appears in the image, crop to the text, and use a sharper or larger image; text should be at least 15–20 pixels tall for good results.
Can it read handwriting?
Not reliably. Tesseract is trained on printed text. Neat block capitals sometimes work, but cursive handwriting is mostly misread.
Does it keep tables and formatting?
No. The output is plain text with the line breaks of the image. Columns and table cells come out as lines of text, and bold, colours and font sizes are lost.
What does the confidence number mean?
It is Tesseract's average confidence across the recognised words, from 0 to 100. Above about 85 the text is usually right; below 60 expect many errors and check every line.
Can I extract text from a PDF?
If the PDF has a text layer, copy the text directly or use a PDF text extractor. For a scanned PDF, convert the page to an image first (for example with the PDF to images tool) and then run OCR on that image.
