About this tool

Show

Enter a mass in milligrams, metric carats, grams, kilograms, tonnes, ounces, pounds, stone, US short tons or UK long tons, and every other unit follows. Everything goes through kilograms, and the imperial side rests on the 1959 international agreement that fixed one pound at exactly 0.45359237 kilograms — an exact number, not a measurement, which is why avoirdupois conversions never drift.

The word "ton" is the one to be careful with, because three different units share it and they are close enough to be mistaken for each other. A US short ton is 2,000 pounds, about 907 kg. A UK long ton is 2,240 pounds, about 1,016 kg. A tonne is exactly 1,000 kg. The spread between the smallest and largest is twelve percent, which on a shipping quote or a freight manifest is a real amount of money, and none of the three is wrong — they are simply three answers to the same word. Spelling helps in writing and not in speech, which is why "metric ton" is the phrase to use out loud.

The ounce has the same problem in a smaller package, and this table uses only one of the two. An avoirdupois ounce is 28.35 grams and is what groceries, post and cooking mean. A troy ounce is 31.10 grams, about ten percent heavier, and is what precious metals are priced in — so a quoted ounce of gold is not the same quantity as an ounce of flour, and converting a bullion price with the ounce on this page produces a number that is wrong by that ten percent. The metric carat, on the other hand, is unambiguous: exactly 200 milligrams, standardised in 1907, which is why gemstone weights are comparable across countries in a way that ounces are not.

One conceptual note. These are units of mass, not weight, even though the everyday word for what a scale reports is "weight". Mass does not change with location; the force it produces does, which is the quantity the force converter handles. A kilogram of flour is a kilogram of flour on the Moon, and it presses on the scale with a sixth of the force.

Frequently asked questions

How many pounds is one kilogram?

1 kg = 2.2046226 lb, and 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg exactly. So an 80 kg person weighs about 176.4 lb. One ounce (oz) is 1/16 lb = 28.3495 g.

What is a stone in kg and pounds?

1 stone (st) = 14 lb = 6.35029318 kg. Body weight is often given in stone in the UK and Ireland — e.g. 11 st 4 lb is 11×14 + 4 = 158 lb ≈ 71.7 kg.

Is a US ton the same as a UK ton or a tonne?

No, all three differ. A tonne (metric ton) = 1000 kg. A US short ton = 2000 lb ≈ 907.185 kg. A UK long ton = 2240 lb ≈ 1016.05 kg. This tool lists all three so you can convert precisely.

What is a carat?

The metric carat (ct) is a mass unit for gemstones and pearls: 1 ct = 200 mg = 0.2 g exactly. Don't confuse it with karat (gold purity), which is not a mass at all.

Is the ounce here the one gold is priced in?

No. This is the avoirdupois ounce, 28.349523125 g, the one used for food and postage. Precious metals are priced in troy ounces of 31.1034768 g — about 9.7% heavier. Quoting a gold price against the wrong ounce overstates the metal by nearly a tenth, which is far larger than any spread you were trying to calculate. The carat in this list is the metric carat for gemstone mass, 200 mg exactly, and has nothing to do with the karat that describes gold purity.

Which factors are exact and which are rounded?

All of them are exact by definition. The pound has been exactly 0.45359237 kg since the 1959 international yard and pound agreement, and everything imperial here follows from it: the ounce is a sixteenth of that, the stone fourteen pounds, the US short ton two thousand and the UK long ton two thousand two hundred and forty. Only the displayed result is rounded. Note how far apart the three tons sit — a UK long ton is 12% heavier than a US short ton — so a shipping quote that just says 'tons' is ambiguous by more than a tenth.
