Quarter Calculator

Companies and governments don't all agree on when a year starts: many countries align the fiscal year with the calendar (Jan), the UK government starts in April, Japan most public corporations in April, the US federal government in October. This tool takes a date and a fiscal-year start month and tells you which Q1/Q2/Q3/Q4 it falls in, which half (H1/H2), the fiscal-year label, and how many days you're into the current quarter / have left.

The label is where the confusion lives, because two conventions are in use and neither is wrong. A fiscal year running October 2026 to September 2027 is called FY2027 by the US federal government, which names the year it ends in, and FY2026 by organisations that name the year it begins in. Australia writes the span out as 2026-27 to sidestep the question entirely. A quarter number without the convention attached is ambiguous by a full year, which is exactly the size of error that survives a spreadsheet review.

Q1 of a fiscal year is not Q1 of the calendar. With an April start, calendar Q1 is fiscal Q4, so a chart plotting "Q1" against a competitor's "Q1" may be comparing January to April. Retail adds a further wrinkle: many chains start the year in late January or early February so the Christmas season falls inside one fiscal year rather than straddling two.

Quarters are also unequal in length. Calendar Q1 has 90 days, or 91 in a leap year, while Q3 has 92, so a quarter-on-quarter figure compares spans that differ by up to two days without anyone adjusting for it. The day counts shown here are actual days rather than an average.

Some retailers use a 4-4-5 or 52/53-week fiscal calendar instead of month boundaries, which this tool does not model. If your quarters always end on a Saturday, you are on one of those and the month-based answer will not match your books.
