Length & Distance Converter

Enter a length or distance in any common unit and see it in all the others instantly: micrometre (µm), millimetre (mm), centimetre (cm), metre (m), kilometre (km), inch (in), foot (ft), yard (yd), statute mile (mi) and nautical mile (nmi). The value is converted to metres internally and then to every unit, so conversions are exact. The imperial units derive from the exact definition 1 inch = 0.0254 m. Handy for everyday measuring (cm ↔ inch), distance and travel (km ↔ mile), construction (m, ft, yd), navigation (nautical mile) and science (µm, mm). Everything is computed locally in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

How many centimetres is one inch?
1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly (25.4 mm), because the inch is defined as 0.0254 m. So 1 cm ≈ 0.3937 inch, and a 12-inch (1 ft) ruler is 30.48 cm.
How many kilometres is a mile?
1 statute mile = 1.609344 km exactly, so 1 km ≈ 0.621371 mile. A 5K run is about 3.11 miles, and 100 km/h ≈ 62.14 mph.
What is a nautical mile and why is it different?
A nautical mile (nmi) = 1852 m exactly, a bit longer than a statute mile (1609.344 m). It's based on one minute of latitude and is used in aviation and shipping; speed in nautical miles per hour is a knot.
Are the foot, yard and mile the same everywhere?
The international foot (0.3048 m), yard (0.9144 m) and mile (1609.344 m) used here are standard worldwide. The tiny historical US survey foot (retired in 2023) differed by about 2 parts per million and only matters for legacy geodetic data.
