How to use

- Click any color's copy button to put its HEX on the clipboard.
About this tool
ShowHide
Browse every CSS colour keyword with a live swatch, its hex code and the equivalent rgb() notation, filtered by hue family or searched across name and hex. The list is worth understanding rather than trusting: it was inherited from the X11 window system through early browsers, not designed, which is why it carries both gray and grey spellings of four different colours and why DarkGray is genuinely lighter than Gray — the two came from different sources and were never reconciled. The one deliberate addition is rebeccapurple, added in 2014 in memory of the daughter of a web standards author. Click the copy button on any colour to take the hex.
Frequently asked questions
Are Gray and Grey both valid?
Yes. All CSS color keywords accept both spellings — Gray, LightGray, DarkGray, DimGray, SlateGray all also work with Grey. The table lists the Gray form for brevity.
What's RebeccaPurple?
Added in CSS Color Module Level 4 in 2014, in memory of Eric Meyer's daughter Rebecca. It's the only named color introduced after the original X11 set.
Which named colors are identical?
Aqua and Cyan are both #00FFFF; Magenta and Fuchsia are both #FF00FF. They date back to the merge of HTML 4's 16 named colors with the X11 set.
Should a design system be built on named colours?
They are fine as literals in a quick page or a demo, but they are an arbitrary palette inherited from X11 with no consistent scale behind the names — DarkGray (#A9A9A9) is lighter than Gray (#808080), for example. Anything that needs even steps, theming or a dark variant should define its own tokens instead of borrowing keywords.
Do these names work outside CSS?
Mostly. The same X11 list turns up in SVG, in many plotting and drawing libraries, and in some editors, but not everywhere and not always with identical values — some environments define only a subset. When the exact colour matters across tools, convert the keyword to hex and pass that.
