VAT / Sales Tax Calculator

Everyday

Two everyday tax questions: 'I see $100 — what's the tax-inclusive total?' (add mode) and 'The receipt says $123 including 23% tax — what was the net price?' (remove mode). This tool does both. Pick from common presets (VAT 19/20/21/23/25%, GST 5/7/10/15%, sales tax) or type your own rate. Shows net, tax, gross, and the net/tax ratio for accounting work where you need both halves of an inclusive price.

Common rates

Net (pre-tax)100.00

Price before tax is applied.

Tax10.00

Amount remitted to tax authority.

Gross (incl. tax)110.00

Final price the customer pays.

Tax / Net split (% of gross)9.09% / 90.91%

Tax-inclusive removal isn't just multiplying — divide by (1 + rate). A $110 gross at 10% has $10 tax, not $11.

How to use

  1. Pick a mode — add tax to a net amount, or remove tax from a tax-inclusive amount.
  2. Enter the amount and tax rate (or pick a preset).
  3. Read the net, tax, and gross — copy or use the ratio for accounting splits.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between 'add' and 'remove' tax?
Add: you have a net price and want the tax-inclusive total ($100 + 10% = $110). Remove: you have a gross price and want to extract the tax ($110 inclusive = $100 net + $10 tax). Removal is not just multiplying by 10% — you divide by 1.10.
Why is removed tax not the same as % of gross?
Because tax was applied to the net, not the gross. 10% tax on $100 net = $10 tax, total $110 — so tax is 10/110 ≈ 9.09% of gross, not 10%. This trips up a lot of receipts and invoices.
Does this handle compound taxes (e.g., Canadian PST + GST)?
Not directly — enter the combined rate (e.g., 13% HST). For separate-line compound taxes, calculate each in sequence: net → +PST → +GST on top.
Are the presets right for my country?
They're common rates worldwide (UK 20%, EU 19–25%, US sales tax varies by state, GST 5–15%). Always type the exact rate for your jurisdiction — these are starting points only.
