Pet Age in Human Years
Everyday
The plain `× 7` rule overstates how fast young pets age. This calculator uses the modern scale: year 1 lines up with about age 15 in a human, year 2 reaches the mid-twenties, and after that each calendar year adds 4–7 human years depending on species and (for dogs) size. Small dogs age the slowest, large dogs the fastest.
Human equivalent
29.5 human years
Life stage: Adult
This is a rough scale — your vet will give a more accurate read based on breed, weight, and health.
How to use
- Pick dog or cat.
- For dogs, pick body size so the per-year rate matches.
- Enter the pet's age — decimal years are fine.
Frequently asked questions
- Why isn't `age × 7` right?
- Pets reach reproductive maturity by year 1–2, which is roughly the late teens for humans — way faster than seven. After that the rate slows down, but it isn't constant either: larger dog breeds in particular age more rapidly than small ones in their middle years.
- Where do the numbers come from?
- The AKC and AVMA both publish scales close to this; the 2019 epigenetic-clock work on Labradors fine-tuned the per-year rates. They're approximations and individual variation is large — this is a conversation starter, not a vet visit.
